Chapter 4 ~ Bettina

Why was I feeling so nervous about the sheriff’s deputy? I hadn’t done anything wrong. Well, I’d stolen a truck last night. And I’d been harboring a missing girl. And I had material knowledge of a murder. Likely more than one.

And that wasn’t counting the potential ding on my food handler’s license.

Okay, so feeling nervous made sense. But there was nothing I could confess, not without sounding crazy and causing even more trouble than I already had.

I took a cue from Reeve and tried to wait calm and curious despite the urge to fidget and maybe blurt out something inappropriate.

“What’s up?” I tried not to sound too chirpy either. “I already powered down the coffee machine, but I can…” I gestured vaguely toward the kitchen.

Frank shook his head. “I just wanted to apologize for not getting over to see you right away after the incident the other night. When Carmen called, I was on the other side of the pass.”

I clicked my tongue, making a dismayed sound. “Sheba told me some of it.” I met his gaze with sincere sympathy. “What you had to deal with was much worse.”

He inclined his head. “When I came round to take your statement, Nickie said you took a couple days off to get checked out at the hospital.” He waited just long enough that I realized belatedly I was supposed to fill the silence. “I hope everything is okay,” he prodded.

“I’m fine.” When he didn’t look quite convinced, I added the truthful embellishments that were the anchors for any good lie. “I didn’t have to get rabies shots, which was what freaked me out most”—at the time, silly me—“and actually, I’m almost healed up.” I shrugged. “So it wasn’t as bad as I thought.” And I knew that sounded entirely honest.

Because it was so much worse than I could’ve believed.

“Anyway,” I finished, “wild horses couldn’t keep me away from baking day.”

Wild werewolves on the other hand…

The deputy nodded slowly. “I’d like to get your statement now, if you have a minute.”

I had to fight every instinct not to glance at Reeve. “Not much to tell, I’m afraid. I left the kitchen through the alley and the…” I forced myself not to hesitate. “Stray dogs were out there. I think they were scrounging for garbage, and that’s why they attacked me, I guess.” Painfully aware of Reeve’s preternatural stillness, I managed to smile at Frank. “I just smelled too yummy.”

The deputy returned a perfunctory grin. “Could you tell me a little more? You told Carmen they were big dogs. How big? What kind of dogs?”

Behind me, Reeve said quietly, “You think this has something to do with the deaths over the pass.”

Frank eyed him, though not suspiciously. This was a small enough town that everyone knew everything.

Well, mostly everything.

The deputy hunched his shoulders then straightened. “Since word’s going to get around anyway… The trailer was tore up bad. Ripped to shreds really. There were marks.” The hat bent under the spasm of his fingers.
